All it takes is just a 10-minute walk from the pier to the oldest temple on the island, Pak Tai Temple, also known as the Yuk Hui Temple. With a history of more than 200 years, the temple was built in 1783, featuring exceptional carvings in brick, wood and tile. Rarely seen in other temples of its kind, Pai Tai Temple is preciously decorated with two pillars carved with dragons and a dazzling array of relics and antiques. It is listed as a historical building by the Antiquities Advisory Committee and the largest Pak Tai Temple in Hong Kong, upholding its status as the religious centre of Cheung Chau. The famous Cheung Chau Jiao festival is held in front of the temple every year.
